Shining Examples Caitlin Gallogly

Caitlin Gallogly For the past two years Caitlin Gallogly ’08 has been hard at work gathering research at national libraries, museums, and archives; writing bibliographic content; securing photo rights; and editing and reviewing hundreds of pages of text. While her experience may not be so different from that of other students, what is different is that Gallogly served as the student collaborator on a book titled Bayard Rustin: American Dreamer, written by Jerald Podair, associate professor of history and Robert S. French Professor of American Studies. The Excellence in History Fund established by Richard Brayton to provide unique learning opportunities for history students partially supported her during this collaboration.

While Podair was busy writing the book, Gallogly was hard at work digging through thousands of pages worth of source documents, books and articles to provide him with the material he needed, at the same time writing the bibliographic essay. Gallogly was truly part of the entire process, frequently reading and providing feedback on chapters and staying in close touch with the publishers. After two years of collaboration, the book is scheduled to hit bookstores and college campuses this fall. Gallogly plans to continue her pursuit of history and has been accepted into the Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota where she will study early American history. She was admitted directly to the Ph.D. program with only an undergraduate degree, which required her to compete with master’s students and transfer Ph.D. students. Gallogly believes her experience collaborating with Podair not only helped with her graduate school application but will also set her far ahead of many of her peers in the program.

Opportunities for this type of student-faculty collaboration and The Excellence in History Fund are both made possible by generous donations from alumni and friends of Lawrence.
